Mohamed Tawfik Water Policy and Governance ExpertEgypt's water demand is114 Billion Cubic Meters per year (BCM/year), while Egypt's annual water supply is fixed at around ~55 BCM, of which more than 90% is supplied by the Nile River (HCWW, 2011). The agricultural sector consumes around 80% of Egypt's water share, whereas only 8% is available for domestic purposes (AbuZeid et al., 2014). This supply-demand gap has been exacerbated by climate change impacts such as extreme heat waves and drought events that increase water demand (particularly for agriculture use). Egypt is investing in nonconventional water resources, such as seawater desalination and reuse of agricultural drainage water (for agricultural purposes). Water reuse is assumed to be one of the resources that can help meet future water demands and challenges.
